We had the pleasure of having dinner at Alvin & Martha Lapp's house, a local Amish family. They do this as an additional income stream to supplement their farm. The family was delightful (especially the children) and there were homemade goods for sale after dinner. The meal, which consisted of salad, beets, "chow chow" (a homemade Amish staple of pickled vegetables), rolls, baked chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, and corn fresh from their farm, had all the homemade flavor and goodness of Sunday dinner at Grandmas many decades ago. The meal was served family style and the children (of various ages) all took part in serving, refilling, clearing, and washing dishes.
